Woman sitting quietly in reflection, finding faith, hope, and strength while beginning again.

Have you ever looked around your life and quietly whispered…

“How did I get here?”

Not because you don’t know what happened.

But because you never imagined your life would look the way it does today.

I know that feeling.

Not long ago, I sat on the edge of my bed at Betty Griffin House and looked around the room.

Everything I owned fit into a few bags.

The room was quiet.

Almost too quiet.

The kind of quiet where your thoughts become louder than anything else.

As I sat there, tears filled my eyes.

One question kept running through my mind.

“How did I get here?”

I wasn’t just asking how I ended up in a shelter.

I was asking how my life had become so different from the life I once knew.

There was a time when I had a home I loved.

A career I was proud of.

Dreams for my future.

Plans that seemed so certain.

Never—not for one second—did I imagine my life would take this path.

As I sat there that evening, memories began flooding my mind.

Some of them made me smile.

Others broke my heart all over again.

I thought about the opportunities I’d been given.

The people I’d loved.

The choices I’d made.

Some were good.

Some I wish I could take back.

For a long time, I allowed those mistakes to become my identity.

Shame has a way of doing that.

It whispers that you’ll never recover.

It tells you everyone else has their life together except you.

It convinces you that you’ve failed too many times to ever begin again.

For a while…

I believed those lies.

Then one day I realized something that hurt even more.

Somewhere along the way…

I had stopped believing I was worth fighting for.

That realization broke my heart.

Because when you stop believing you matter, you stop protecting your own future.

You settle for less than you deserve.

You stop dreaming.

You survive instead of truly living.

I’ve had to ask myself some painfully honest questions.

Why did I keep making choices that hurt me?

Why did I keep sabotaging good opportunities?

Why did I stop believing that a better future was possible?

Those aren’t easy questions.

Some days they still bring tears to my eyes.

But healing begins with honesty.

Not the kind of honesty that condemns us…

The kind that helps us understand ourselves so we can grow.

Today, my life is still far from perfect.

I’m still rebuilding.

I’m still searching for the right job.

I’m still praying for a home where Faith and I can finally feel settled.

Some days I feel hopeful.

Other days I feel exhausted.

Some days I wonder how everything will work out.

But something inside me has changed.

I no longer believe my worst mistakes define who I am.

I no longer believe my past gets to decide my future.

And I no longer believe I’m walking this road alone.

Maybe that’s why I started this blog.

Not because I’ve arrived.

Not because I have all the answers.

And certainly not because I’ve lived a perfect life.

I’m writing because I remember what it felt like to believe I was completely alone.

I remember crying myself to sleep.

I remember wondering if I had ruined my life.

I remember asking God if He could still use someone like me.

I remember smiling around other people while quietly falling apart inside.

Maybe you’ve been there too.

Maybe you’re there right now.

If you are…

I want you to hear this from someone who truly understands.

You are not alone.

Not because our stories are exactly the same.

But because pain has a way of making us all believe the same lie…

That no one understands.

I understand.

And I believe God can use every part of our story—even the broken parts—for something beautiful.

If my story gives just one person hope…

If it reminds one person that tomorrow is worth facing…

If one person reads these words and decides not to give up…

Then every tear I’ve cried has been worth it.

That’s why I write.

Because no one should ever have to heal alone.

Today I still ask myself questions.

But they’re different questions now.

Instead of asking…

“How did I get here?”

I’m learning to ask…

“Where can I go from here?”

That question is filled with hope.

Because as long as we’re still breathing…

God is still writing our story.

Maybe you’re starting over too.

Maybe you’re carrying shame.

Maybe you’re wondering if life will ever feel normal again.

If that’s you…

Take one more step.

Then another.

Don’t worry about having the whole journey figured out.

Just keep moving forward.

One day you’ll look back and realize that what felt like the end…

Was actually the beginning.

Thank you for letting me share my heart with you.

If this post touched you, I’d love to hear your story.

“Have you ever found yourself asking, “How did I get here?”

No matter what your answer is…

You are welcome here.

You are seen.

You are loved.

And most of all…

You are not alone.

With love,

Katrina ❤️
